Today we celebrate World Environment Day. It is a reminder that environmental sustainability and gender equity go hand in hand.
Through our Empowering Women and Girls project, we are supporting women to lead the way in building sustainable livelihoods. We offer opportunities for women and girls to build their knowledge on climate resiliency. We also have hands-on skills training on topics such as composting, creating kitchen gardens and building solar powered lanterns.
Empowering women means empowering women, girls and their communities to adapt, thrive, and take care of the environment. Let’s continue to invest in skills, and livelihoods that sustain both people and the planet.

Enhancing learner success in ODL at University of The Gambia.
With the support of the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) @COL4D, stakeholders at the University of The Gambia (UTG) @UniOfGambia recently convened to enhance their knowledge of learner support processes in Open and Distance Learning (ODL). This event builds upon previous COL-supported activities to strengthen ODL implementation at the institution. Prior support focused on ODL policy development and validation, course enhancement through open educational resources (OER), online facilitation proficiency, and the Moodle platform's practical use.
Participants in the workshop included Deans of Schools/Faculties, Principal Officers, and senior academic members of UTG. In his opening remarks, Professor Kayode Adekeye, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, reiterated the workshop's objectives to:
• enhance participants’ understanding of learner support processes in ODL;
• develop clear guidelines for adequate learner support;
• equip participants with applied tools and strategies for ODL support; and
• foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing among stakeholders.
By the end of the workshop, key components of effective learner support in ODL were identified, and a draft learner support guideline was developed, tailored to UTG’s unique institutional context.
Professor Herbert Robinson, Vice Chancellor of UTG, thanked COL for its ongoing support and emphasised the need for robust learner support processes to ensure a seamless learning experience for ODL students. He assured stakeholders of management’s commitment to ODL implementation at UTG and confirmed that the university's leadership would formally approve the learner support guidelines once it is finalised.
Professor Jane-Frances Agbu, COL’s Advisor for Higher Education, reaffirmed COL’s dedication to advancing ODL in partner institutions across the Commonwealth. She highlighted ongoing efforts at The Gambia's national and institutional levels to mainstream ODL. At the national level, COL is supporting the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (MoHERST) in developing ODL quality assurance guidelines for accrediting institutions and programmes. Once finalised, these guidelines will serve as the basis for accrediting UTG and other higher education institutions in The Gambia.
This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing learner support structures at UTG and ensuring the successful implementation of ODL in The Gambia.

We're proud to share one of the learning courses developed to support our project at the Commonwealth of Learning:
🌍 Climate Change and Climate Action
✍️ Authored by Madhavi Joshi
This course explores the impact of climate change from a local perspective — focusing on how changing weather patterns affect agriculture, water, food security, and livelihoods. The activities and readings will help learners to anticipate the impact of climate change in their own context, examine policies that are relevant to their location and develop a relevant advocacy strategy. Learners will learn to identify key strategies for climate action such as mobilisation and community-based conservation, identify critical conservation issues in a local context and align various climate actions and policies to support conservation efforts.
