Education Specialist - Higher Education
Dr. Godson Gatsha joined COL on 1 April 2014 as Education Specialist, Higher Education.
Dr. Godson Gatsha has over 30 years working experience in both conventional and open and distance learning (ODL) environments. He has worked as a teacher, ODL practitioner, regional manager, director, executive secretary, ODL technical advisor and Commonwealth of Learning (COL) Focal Point. His work has included working with higher education institutions including both single- and dual-mode universities, with special focus on ODL capacity building, research and publication, quality assurance with a special interest in the Commonwealth of Learning Review and Improvement Model (COL-RIM). He has also participated in the development of the Quality Assurance Toolkit for Tertiary Education in Botswana. As a Regional Manager of a national ODL lead agency in Botswana he managed the deployment of tertiary education programmes through the ODL mode to deeply marginalised communities.
Prior to joining COL, he was Director of the Southern African Development Community – Centre for Distance Education (SADC-CDE) and Executive Secretary of the Distance Education Association of Southern Africa (DEASA).
Dr. Gatsha has also conducted a number of consultancies contracted by Commonwealth Secretariat, Commonwealth of Learning, Letloa Trust (Botswana), Open Channels (UK), SADC Secretariat (Botswana), African Development Bank and Vanavevhu Trust (Zimbabwe). Dr. Gatsha has published several peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters and school text books. He has also presented papers in several international conferences on ODL, and is reviewer of a number of journals, including Book Reviews Editor for COL’s Journal of Learning for Development.
Dr. Gatsha’s academic and professional qualifications include a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with specialisation in education policy studies, a certificate in gender in our everyday lives both from the University of Pretoria, a master’s degree in educational management, a diploma in accounting and business studies from the University of Botswana, a post-graduate diploma in distance education and MA in distance education both from the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), and a Bachelor of Arts degree, a higher education diploma, a Bachelor of Education with specialisation in educational management and a certificate for distance education practitioners – all from the University of South Africa (UNISA). He also has a post-graduate diploma in monitoring and evaluation from the Stellenbosch University, a monitoring and evaluation certificate for programme managers from Rhodes University, a graduate diploma in leadership in ICT and knowledge society from Dublin City University (UK) and a certificate in education from the University of Zimbabwe.
