We congratulate Dr Ramamurthy Sreedher, widely known as the Father of Community Radio in India, on being named for the Padma Shri, as the country marks its 77th Republic Day.
Dr Sreedher served as Director of COL’s Asian Regional Centre, CEMCA, from 2007–2012. During his tenure, he worked closely with India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to advance the use of Community Radio in open and distance learning, particularly in rural and remote areas, and under his leadership, CEMCA was awarded the Government of India’s mandate to host the Community Radio Facilitation Centre.
CEMCA continues this work today, expanding community radio in dark districts where no stations operate, while also supporting IVR, AI-enabled tools, and other educational media to connect learning institutions with communities and achieve greater learning opportunities.
As Dr Sreedher highlights:
"Radio is still relevant in an AI-dominated society . Taking advantage of AI that also uses voice commands and sound, Radio must evolve to become a visual radio . The challenge is to develop low-cost personalized, localised radio with innovative contents and formats that young people can access, on their mobile phones, to access education and hone their skills.”
