Senior Adviser: Open Schooling
Dr Johan Hendrikz joined COL as Senior Adviser: Open Schooling on 1 February 2016. Johan grew up in Namibia and moved to South Africa for his studies and professional career. He studied at the University of South Africa (UNISA) and the University of Pretoria (UP), where he obtained his Master's and Doctoral Degrees in Education Management.
Johan was a teacher, headmaster and superintendent of education at UP and was appointed Director of Marketing and Communication in 1993. In 2002, UP asked him to launch a distance education initiative in the Faculty of Education. The initiative focused specifically on the upgrade of teacher qualifications in South Africa.
Johan’s relationship with COL goes back to 2005 when he invited COL to partner with UP to present the first DETA conference (Distance Education and Teacher Education in Africa). Over a period of 12 years, Johan was contracted by COL to present at workshops on open schooling; the development of quality criteria for teacher education; and distance education in India and Sri Lanka. He was involved in several workshops in various countries in Africa on the use of mobile phones for learning, and contributed to the establishment of a school-based teacher education programme for Palestinian refugee schools in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.
