COL project helping to strengthen mathematics education in the Caribbean.

The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) @COL4D continues supporting its partners in expanding access to quality education. In this spirit, COL, through its Virtual University for Small States of the Commonwealth (VUSSC), has launched a project to strengthen mathematics education in the Caribbean. The Advancing Caribbean Teachers (ACT) in Mathematics Project – implemented in collaboration with the Ministries of Education in St Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis, and St Vincent and the Grenadines – is critical to improving students numeracy skills. By fostering ongoing engagement and professional growth, the project ensures that teacher development translates into tangible improvements in student outcomes through a structured approach that moves beyond traditional short-term training models, offering long-term sustainability in math instruction.

At the core of this initiative is COL’s dedication to building sustainable capacity among educators in small states. The project aims to equip teachers with innovative strategies to enhance student learning outcomes in mathematics.

Launched earlier this year, the ACT in Mathematics Project brought together 84 education stakeholders, including numeracy coaches, curriculum officers, education officers, teachers, and school principals.

Participants engaged in intensive training sessions focusing on:
• Technology-enabled and gender-responsive teaching methodologies
• Student-centred learning approaches to foster conceptual understanding
• Instructional techniques using fractions to strengthen teaching strategies.

Following the initial training, participants transitioned into an interactive community of practice. This virtual network facilitates continuous professional development, enabling teachers to collaborate on lesson planning and share best practices, receive mentorship and guidance from mathematics education experts, and implement and refine new teaching methodologies based on real-time classroom feedback.

Dr. Lois George of The University of the West Indies @UWImona, a key expert supporting the project, emphasised the broader significance of the project: “This is not just about improving how we teach mathematics—it is about transforming education in the Caribbean. By equipping teachers with effective tools, we are fostering a generation of students who will be better prepared for future success.”

COL’s commitment to strengthening human resource capacity in small states is evident through this project. By leveraging technology and research-driven teaching methodologies, the ACT in Mathematics Project represents a significant advancement in the region’s education system.

Dr Schontal Moore, COL Adviser: VUSSC, who is leading the project, underscored its importance in addressing key educational challenges, “The Caribbean needs support in boosting students preparedness and performance in the twinned areas of mathematics and language/literacy education. Through COL, the intention is to address one challenge at a time: building the capacity of classroom teachers to help strengthen their students competence and readiness for numeracy and communication.”
