On the sidelines of #pcf11bw, partners in COL’s Teacher-in-the-Loop AI (TiL AI) initiative, also known as Trainer-in-the-Loop AI for its TVET model — came together to reflect on lessons learned and plan the next steps of this exciting project!

The partners involved are representatives from Ghana, India, Jamaica and Kenya. They also led workshops, presented papers, and joined key sessions during the Forum.

What’s next in Phase 2?

- Building AI literacy and co-creating learning resources.
- Using AI-generated content in real classrooms.
- Researching how generative AI impacts teaching and learning.

TiL AI at a glance:

- Human-centred innovation: Keeps teachers at the core of using generative AI to co-create curriculum-aligned Open Educational Resources (OER).

- Collaborative mentoring: Links mentors, pre-service and in-service teachers and TVET trainers in a co-creative model across countries.

- Practical tools: Deploys COL’s GenAI-powered content generator platform in secondary Mathematics and Biology, as well as Fashion Design and Science Laboratory Technology for TVET.

- Frugal AI: Hosts the solution at a national partner institution to keep it affordable and ensure partners retain direct control over the AI services.

- Global reach: Engages partners in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean, with early capacity building in the Pacific focused on STEM teachers.

Together, we’re shaping the future of teaching with AI: for teachers, by teachers.

The Pacific Open Courses win an OE Global Award 2025!

Developed through a partnership between the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), PACFOLD–Learn at the University of the South Pacific, and supported by New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Pacific Open Courses were developed for teachers in the Pacific.

These courses promote open, distance, and flexible learning, allowing educators to freely access content and earn digital badges or certificates. One of the courses focuses on how to adapt course content for specific contexts and several of the courses have subsequently been adapted and re-offered by different stakeholders in the Pacific. The course content has also been adapted and re-used in other contexts, including most recently in sub-Saharan Africa.

“COL is committed to maximising open access to learning resources, and we are thankful to our partners in the Pacific region who have supported us to develop and share these open courses. We are grateful also to OE Global for recognising our collective efforts.”
 — Tony Mays, Director: Education, COL

Congratulations to all our partners and contributors for this recognition of shared innovation in open and distant education
