#COL4D in Support of #ODL Design for Teacher Training in #SierraLeone

#TeacherEducation in Sierra Leone faces unique challenges. Not only does it need to meet the annual demand for new teachers, but it must also address the training needs of existing unqualified and untrained teachers. Additionally, providing #ContinuousProfessionalDevelopment for over 37,000 government-employed teachers is crucial. To tackle these issues, open and distance learning (ODL) has become essential for teacher education in the country.

A stakeholder workshop on ODL design for teacher training, organised by Sierra Leone’s Teaching Service Commission with support from #COL4D, shed light on the importance of ODL. The high-level workshop brought together 30 participants from various teacher training institutions and national bodies, including the Tertiary Education Commission, the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, and the National Council for Technical and Vocational Awards.

During the interactive sessions, participants discussed critical areas such as the current status of ODL, existing courses, enrolment, staff capacities, and the use of technology in teacher training. COL emphasised the workshop’s significance in applying the recently developed national #ODL policy for tertiary institutions to teacher education in Sierra Leone.

Based on the workshop outcomes, guidelines have been drafted for ODL In-Service Education and Training courses that lead to certification, as well as credit-bearing courses for promotion and career advancement.

Pioneering #AI-powered learner support in partnership with the National University of #Samoa and #COL4D

This innovative pilot project was designed to enhance online #LearnerSupport using #GPT-powered technology, making a positive impact in #education.

The pilot focused on improving the effectiveness of #OnlineLearning, addressing students challenges, and providing personalised support to help them succeed. With up to 25% of learner queries related to the #LearningManagementSystem rather than academic content, this initiative has been vital in ensuring students have the necessary tools to navigate their educational journey.

The #AI-powered help desk streamlines support by automating routine administrative tasks, allowing staff and faculty to focus on building relationships with students and fostering their learning and development.

Highlighting the importance of collaboration and innovation in shaping the future of education, this pilot project was carried out by @COL4D as part of a workstream to increase learning effectiveness in a regional project on open, distance and flexible learning #ODFL in the Pacific supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, New Zealand #MFATNZ.
