COL’s Empowering Women and Girls (EWG) project has developed Tiene Toa — an interactive board game designed to deepen understanding of women’s human rights and support the prevention of gender-based violence.

Collaborating to navigate real-life scenarios, players work together to transform their town into a space free from gender-based violence. The game is available both digitally and as a physical board game.

In a recent interview with COL, Professor Puleng Lenkabula, UNISA’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor, reflects on AI governance, academic integrity, digital sovereignty, and Africa-centred knowledge systems in higher education. She also discusses the need for technology to serve the continent’s development priorities.

“The African university needs to respond to the danger posed by AI, which can be deployed to control, dominate, and subdue whole societies in the age of big data. But I believe as Africans, we will find the responses and preserve our freedoms, independence, and sovereignty.”

What’s next for education in the Caribbean? COL held its Caribbean Focal Points Meeting in March 2026, bringing together senior officials from 12 Caribbean Commonwealth countries, along with Malta, to shape a shared vision for improving education and skills development in the region. The priorities are clear: strengthening teacher development, advancing digital and AI literacy, aligning skills with the blue and green economies, and deepening regional collaboration. Discussions also highlighted the need to enhance learning in mathematics and language, and to expand opportunities in STEAM, TVET, and innovation.
