Canada speaks out to confirm its commitment to the Commonwealth.

On 13 March 2025, the Honourable Robert Oliphant, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that Global Affairs Canada (GAC) @GAC_Corporate would continue to support the Commonwealth through the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) @COL4D.

Speaking in the context of Commonwealth Day this year, Parliamentary Secretary Oliphant commented, Canada is a proud member of the Commonwealth and is committed to working with its fellow members to broaden shared understanding, build consensus and drive action for a more democratic, inclusive and prosperous future for all.

Underscoring that commitment, he noted that Canada will provide CAD 7.8 million in funding to COL over the next three years.

COL President and CEO, Professor Peter Scott @peter_scott, commented on the significance of GAC’s long-term commitment to COL and its mandate and mission to empower people across the Commonwealth through open learning. He noted, “At a time of global uncertainty, it is important that countries such as Canada are speaking clearly and loudly for a positive, inclusive, multilateral, global community. Canada’s unwavering support helps drive the critical work of COL in working with the nations of our Commonwealth family, transforming inequity to advantage through learning.”
